Below is a sample of a word sort activity that I use to check vocabulary and understanding of words that correspond with a lesson or unit.
I choose 18 words that the students would be familiar with. The students then would have to cut out the words; sort the words into whatever groupings they saw fit; finally, they were to write a sentence using all the words in that grouping. The sentence had to show that what ever words they chose and grouped together made sense.
For example; The diseases of the respiratory system include asthma, lung cancer and emphysema. OR - To avoid diseases of the lungs like emphysema or lungs cancer, then don’t smoke.

Respiratory System Word Sort
DIRECTIONS: Below are words that do along with the Respiratory System that we have been studying.
1. Cut out the words.
2. Sort the words into at least 4 categories.
3. On a separate sheet of paper:
1. Paste the words below in their categories.
2. For each category, write a sentence or two using all the words listed as they fit in that category. The sentence should show the mean of the words used.
OXYGEN | ASTHMA | ALVEOLI |
EXERCISE | TRACHEA | INHALE |
HEALTHY LUNGS | NOSE AND MOUTH | |
EMPHYSEMA | LUNG CANCER | DIAPGRAGM |
GET A FLU SHOT | AVOID POLUTED AIR | CARBON DIOXIDE |
BRONCHIAL TUBES | LUNGS | EXHALE |
Sample Answers - sorted groupings.

Sentences
1. The diseases of the respiratory system include asthma, lung cancer and emphysema.
2. To avoid diseases of the lungs like emphysema or lungs cancer, then don’t smoke.
3. The job of the respiratory system is to inhale oxygen and then to exhale carbon dioxide.
This is a very creative lesson , that can be used as either pre or post assessment (preferably both). It looks like a valuable way to gain insight as to the knowledge that the students already possess on a given topic, and gauge how much they have learned after the unit. I can see how this can be used cross-curricular, and can be adapted to various topics (and manipulated to fit the needs of any student at ANY level). Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you allowed this activity to be an open-ended project where the students were able to group the vocabulary in how they saw the connections. This would then allow them to support the 'why' in their reasoning. You could get a full discussion going in to what words go into which sort with a purpose.
