Interactive Read Aloud

1.        Interactive Read-aloud:
      A.  The article “Health and Well Being” is used in my 8th grade health class.  The article is used as an introduction to the health class as a way to get the students to know what health really is.
      B.  I have highlighted the main points of each paragraphs rather than using sticky notes.  This article would guide me as we read the article.  Also, if I decided to break the students into smaller groups, there could be a leader with the highlighted article.

      C.  After each paragraph, I will stop and review the definition of the type of health and then have to students name examples from the paragraph. There are two options I think I could use.  The first would be to show the article on my whiteboard and have the students highlight the information that is essential for them to know; they would highlight as I did.  Another option would be to list the definition and examples on the whiteboard.
D1.  As a form of assessment I created a poster/flyer type assignment.  The students are assigned a paragraph from the article and they must illustrate it for the class.
D2.  Finally, each student is given a worksheet called a “Wellness Quilt” The students    are to, by themselves, fill in the types of health.  They can use words or pictures to   illustrate their meaning of the types of health.

A)
1     Health is the state of well-being. There are many parts of health - physical, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and environmental. To be considered in good health, a person must have all of these parts in balance.

2
Physical health is the component of health that is probably the most obvious to you. This has to do with how your body works. This includes eating nutritious meals, exercising, and keeping your body at an appropriate weight. It means not putting illegal drugs into your system or drinking alcohol. It also means to not be suffering from a disease.

3
Emotional health focuses on the ability to express your emotions appropriately. This expression should be positive. It doesn't mean you will never feel upset. It means you can cope even in unpleasant situations. It also means you know how to lean on others and ask for help when you need to. Everyone needs this kind of support once in a while.

4
Social health refers to the quality of your relationships with others. It doesn't mean being the most popular. It means a person can work well with others and stay away from those who might not respect him. A person who is socially healthy respects others, has supportive relationships, and can express needs to those around him.

5
Mental health has to do with coping with the demands of day-to-day life. It's about not having a mental illness such as a phobia, but also having something, namely self-esteem. It's about being happy with the person you are. It's about being comfortable with yourself.

6
Spiritual health means having a purpose in life. It means having a sense of values or strong beliefs and ideals, and living according to them. For some, it may involve a specific religion. For others, it may not.

7
Environmental health is taking care of the living and nonliving things around you. This involves keeping your air clean, your water clean, and your food safe as well as keeping the land safe.

8
All six components of health can affect each other. Being healthy requires a balance of all six. Wellness is the achievement of an individual's best in all six areas. Chances are for most people, an individual is not always completely healthy or completely unhealthy. It's a changing continuum. You can make choices to strive for optimal health.

9
Many factors continually affect the six components of health. There are hereditary influences such as what kind of diseases run in the family. There are social influences. For example, friends pressuring you to drink alcohol can be negative social influences. Relatives who talk out their problems are positive social influences. There are cultural influences that can influence things in your life such as food in your diet. There are environmental influences such as pollutants.

10
There may be many influences on your wellness, but there are also ways to take charge of it. Learn about health information to make healthy choices. Lead a healthy lifestyle based on this knowledge. Have a positive attitude. Feel good about yourself.

What is Health Poster
  1. As a form of assessment I created a poster/flyer type assignment.  The students are assigned a paragraph from the article and they must illustrate it for the class.
Each student will already have the article Health and Well Being.  Each student will be given a strip of paper with their assignment.  They are to complete the questions only using the article for their information.  Finally, they are to create an informational poster presenting and illustration their questions.
A rubric has been added to give the students a little bit more guidance.

Health activities - word sorts

Below is a sample of a word sort activity that I use to check vocabulary and understanding of words that correspond with a lesson or unit.
I choose 18 words that the students would be familiar with.  The students then would have to cut out the words; sort the words into whatever groupings they saw fit; finally, they were to write a sentence using all the words in that grouping.  The sentence had to show that what ever words they chose and grouped together made sense.
For example;   The diseases of the respiratory system include asthma, lung cancer and emphysema.  OR  - To avoid diseases of the lungs like emphysema or lungs cancer, then don’t smoke.
